Walsham won the toss and chose to bat. With skipper Bryant out to the second ball of the game well caught low at first slip it fell upon Jackson and Owston to build a partnership. Jackson was in a belligerent mood and 20 in quick time before he was caught behind. Owston was joined by Lynn and they put together the best partnership of the match. Lynn made 73 out of the 140 they added in his usual fashion. His downfall brought Forbes to the crease and he made 41 in very quick time. After Owston fell for a very impressive 93 the innings finished with Waugh unbeaten on 15 and Palmer being run out going for a tight second from the last ball of the innings.
Shanks began the Hadleigh reply with a flurry of boundaries before he was well caught by Joe Bryant on the cover boundary off the bowling of Waugh. This brought the Hadleigh captain Lloyd to the wicket and he set about the Walsham attack. Hadleigh lost 2 more wickets before S. Tampion joined Lloyd to add 96. Tampion was removed LBW by Forbes who finished with 3-30. Jackson was unfortunate that 2 catches were dropped off his slow bowling but each resulted in a run out, 2 out of a total of 3 for the innings. The Hadleigh innings closed on 209-9.
