20 points from the local derby at Summer Road

Sure enough visiting skipper West called correctly at the toss and asked Walsham to bat first in this local derby match at Summer Road.

Things started badly for Walsham as Campbell skied to mid- off in the second over but from this point onwards the batting was much more the way it should with Liam Bryant and Neil Baker working hard to survive against the two openers who used conditions very well and had the new ball nipping around making runs very hard to come by. Shortly before the 20 over mark and as the opening bowlers started to tire, Bryant took Taylor for three boundaries in an over and Baker then took Starling for a further three boundaries to move the run rate up above 2 runs per over. From this point the run rate steadily crept up and when Baker was out stumped for a hard fought 36 which contained some very pleasing strokes Jackson came to the crease and got off the mark with a pulled 6 over deep square leg followed by a 4 in a similar fashion. Bryant continued to turn over the score being particularly harsh on the Woolpit off- spinner. When Bryant was caught behind for 84, Forbes attempted to further increase the run rate but was caught on the boundary before he really get going. Waugh and Jackson then took down the Woolpit bowling as the openers returned to finish the innings off. Jackson finishing unbeaten on 77 from 57 ball and Waugh with 26 from 19. Walsham posted 236-4 from 45 overs.

Woolpit were given a flying start by Henry Bevan who hit the ball very hard and apart from a missed opportunity behind the stumps on 10 made a very well struck 67 which included two mighty 6’s and 8 fours. Forbes removed his opening partner and the dependable West for only 25 runs between them before Ben George took over taking 6-31 from 12.2 overs and ripping the heart out of the Woolpit reply. He had the dangerous Bevan caught on the boundary by skipper Bryant, Coombes (credit to the young man for walking with and not putting the playing umpire under pressure) caught behind and Starling caught by Baker at cover but his 3 other wickets were all bowled with big spinning off- breaks. Mark Rothon picked up the other two wickets to fall in another very good display with the ball which saw Woolpit go from 94-2 to 120 all out in 33.2 overs.
