Haverhill II- Away

Having lost a second toss from two attempts for the season, 10-man Walsham were again asked to bat first in a game reduced to 80 overs to allow for expected showers.

Bryant and Scarce put on 41 for the first wicket before Scarce was bowled via his inside edge and pad. Barry Lynn came to the wicket having not picked a bat up since last season and proceeded to mix reluctant defence with all-out attack to dominate a partnership of 119 for the second wicket with Bryant. His 71 included 8 fours and 5 sixes before he was out caught going for another mighty hit. Bryant soon followed for 82 leaving George (20) to marshall the innings through to the end. Walsham finished on 201-6 from 40 overs.

Haverhill’s reply started in an unusual fashion with opener Hartshorn hit on the side of the helmet by Forbes. Fortunately he was able to continue and showed no sign of long term effects and fortunately for Walsham Forbes (7-0-32-1) dismissed him shortly afterwards. Bryant (7-2-12-2) then had Williams well caught by Taylor Rothon and bowled Dovaston next ball. Fox and Kettle then put on 52 for the fourth wicket before Mark Rothon picked up the first of his 5 wickets to dismiss Kettle caught and bowled for 22. There then followed a steady stream of wickets as Rothon (12-0-53-5) and George (13-1-41-2) ensured Walsham picked up the full 20 points by dismissing Haverhill with 6 balls remaining.

Good bowling mixed with good fielding and catching to follow another solid effort with the bat meant that the extra player that we didn’t have wasn’t missed.
