On choosing to bat on a sticky day at the lovely Mistley ground, the home innings could hardly have got off to a worse start when skipper Stevens was bowled by Forbes (10-0-30-3) from the second ball of the first over. At the other end, de Carvalho (7-3-8-0) kept things very tight but wasn’t able to find an edge as he passed the defensive gropes of the home batters with regularity. Forbes removed the dangerous Bibby, caught by Lynn at cover and his fellow left hander caught behind by Scarce. This kept the scoring rate down as the first drinks break came and went. Waugh (6-0-30-1) was brought into the attack and despite three boundaries being struck from his first over bowled well and picked up the important wicket of Churchill. Rothon (12-0-37-2) and George (8.2-0-42-3) then combined to pick up wickets with the home batters looking to push on towards the back end of the innings. Scarce took a further catch, standing up to the bowling of Rothon and a stumping of the bowling of George to add to his fine display behind the stumps and Forbes effected a run out with a direct hit from long off. All in all a fine display in the field limited to the home team to 150 all out.
Walsham’s reply started in a similar fashion to Mistley’s with Scarce falling to his first ball in the first the over. Jackson and Bryant then combined to add 100 for the second wicket. Bryant fell for 32, caught off the bowling of Garwood bringing Lynn to the wicket. He kept his record against Mistley with a nice round 0 to add the last seasons twin zeroes. Jackson looked to dominate the bowlers- striking freely and riding his luck to add a further 66 runs to his rapidly growing tally for the season before being caught. Campbell (23) also looked to attack the bowling and struck several boundaries before he was stumped. This left de Carvalho (20* including a mighty 6 over the bowls green) and Waugh (5*) to see the side home which they did with 16 overs to spare for a 5 wicket win.
